Frisco police chief explains why fair had to be shut down | Opinion

On Tuesday, we raised those concerns with Frisco officials, and, to his credit, Police Chief David Shilson offered more insight into what happened Saturday night at the fair.

That statement is welcome, and provides needed clarity because too much of what is known had come from the most unreliable of sources: social media. Videos have circulated of crowds fleeing from gunshots amid brawls. “While there may be disappointment by people who wished to attend the event, the safety of everyone is paramount and that was the basis for the decision to revoke the special-events permit in accordance with Frisco’s special-event ordinance,” Shilson said.

For law enforcement, it can be difficult to know when to provide enough information to give the public while not compromising an investigation. The delay here was too long, but Shilson has helped get things back on track.
