Forget hot girl summer. On (prestige) television, the season truly belongs to Brett Gelman.
For those of us who binged both, Gelman is inescapable in the best way possible: whether he’s getting sucker-punched by’s leads Joyce and Hopper to “cut the horseshit” and have sex already.
When you define somebody as a good person or a bad person, you’re not really seeing the past and what it took for them to get to that personality. That’s really my job, to figure out what leads this person to make these decisions. In my mind, when I’m playing [Martin], he feels betrayed, and he hates himself; his life is in utter shambles, and he is doing whatever he can, especially in the beginning of the season, to pretend that it’s not, and that takes a lot of energy.
I feel both. If she decided not to move forward, I’m like, “All right, hey, you ended it, and you created an incredible piece.” But, of course, I would love to do more and work with Phoebe for the rest of my life.I envision him one of a few ways. He’s going to AA; he’s trying to be sober; he’s getting into strange codependent relationships with women that are super chaotic. Or he could be trying to get Claire back in a really pathetic, aggressive way.
It was a great monologue, and to say that to Winona Ryder and David Harbour is really insane. Especially saying to a person [Ryder] that I grew up worshipping—“Hey, hook up with this guy already”—is insane. I love that type of person who is rude and grumpy, but, at the end of the day, is the person you can actually trust the most in the room., and there is an actual answering machine with a message from you on it, saying, “If this is Joyce...I have an update...
