Screen Rant and other media outlets spoke to TheLastOfUs star IamGabrielLuna about surprises for longtime fans of the game and the evolution of Tommy even beyond the original story:
The Last of Us is a highly successful video game, having earned critical acclaim, awards, and a deeper exploration of the world through a sequel, comics, and HBO series. The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic world with most of the population wiped out after a fungal outbreak decimated the world. Hardened smuggler Joel is tasked with traversing a ravaged America with Ellie, a fourteen-year-old with a dark secret, whom he has been tasked to protect.
Gabriel Luna On The Last Of Us This is a rare occasion where you know a bit about your character's trajectory because he's not only in the first game, but he plays an even bigger role in the second. How do you take all that and put it into the character? Screen Rant: Were you able to explore aspects of Tommy that you think will be a surprise to fans of the game?
The prologue of the first episode does allow us to really see that bonding. Was there a relative order as the trio of actors progress that relationship leading into the climactic scene with Sarah? Or was it all over the place, and you had to come back together to make that emotional moment work? I'd like to take it back a little bit to the very beginning. What was the process of coming on board the project? Were you auditioning? Were you offered the role? Did you know at the time that Pedro Pascal would be playing Joel?
I can't think of a better way to research a role than play a video game, but you're going to have those expectations from the people that love the game. How much does that weigh on your mind as a performer going in? Is it always present throughout filming? The prologue scene in the first episode was shot like the game, in third person POV. Was that your understanding while you were shooting it, that that was maybe what the director was going for? What was it like to shoot all that stuff?
Screen Rant: Can you talk about how Tommy's changed from when we first meet him prior to the outbreak to 20 years later after the outbreak?
