If you want to see a textbook release on the goal line in press coverage, that was it. Wilson chopped his feet off of the snap then head faked with a big step to the inside to fool the cornerback. As soon as he got fellow rookieto commit to blocking off the inside release, Wilson broke back to the outside and was wide open for his first career touchdown.
Everything Wilson showed off on Sunday, from his abilities as a route-runner and pass-catcher to the actual production on the stats sheet, was very good news for the Jets. For one thing, Wilson looks the part of a No. 1 receiver that will eventually force defenses to commit more defenders to stop him. That means other New York receivers likeand Davis would get more isolated looks with more chances to enhance their own production and boost the Jets’ overall offense.
For another, Wilson looks like the dynamic weapon that could help put an end to New York’s red zone woes. Jets fans have gotten all too familiar with the pain of watching drives stall inside the opponent’s 20 and seeing their team kick field goal after field goal instead of punching it in for six. On Sunday, Wilson converted two different red zone chances including the shocking game-winner.
