The end of an ownership bid headlined by actor Ryan Reynolds was confirmed on Thursday.

While sources said Remington and Reynolds pulled out because they couldn’t gain exclusivity to negotiate an agreement with the National Capital Commission for LeBreton Flats and the City of Ottawa, their departure from the process hit the fan base like an open-ice hit by Tkachuk.

“It’s called a consortium, when you form a group to buy an entity, and it’s such a fancy way of saying, ‘I need a sugar mommy or a sugar daddy,’ and, if that doesn’t happen, I’ll buy a U.S. senator, which everyone can afford.”Article content When Postmedia reported that Reynolds and Bratty were planning to make that $1-billion bid, it felt like they had emerged as front-runners in the process and were poised to get the deal across the finish line by May 15 deadline for non-binding bids.Article content

It felt like not only did they want it, but the NHL did, too, and we believe commissioner Gary Bettman wanted Reynolds to be part of the league. Sources said Bettman was caught off-guard when Reynolds decided to join Remington, but wasn’t going to stand in his way. Reynolds committed himself to Remington because he liked what he heard and believed in their vision for the Senators.Article content
