A Gary man is charged with four felonies after leading police in a pursuit on U.S. 12 that reached speeds in excess of 100 mph in Porter County before crashing into an oncoming car, killing the other driver, according to court documents.

Nicholas Trinidad, 41, of Muskegon, Michigan, died Tuesday in the head-on crash just west of Indiana 49. Martell Jaquan Harper, 37, is charged with resisting law enforcement in a motor vehicle and causing death or catastrophic injury to another person, a Level 3 felony; possession of cocaine, a Level 5 felony; and two Level 6 felonies, resisting law enforcement and auto theft. He remains in custody in Porter County Jail; an initial hearing has not been scheduled. Around 1:39 p.m.

Police on the scene said Trinidad was trapped in the driver seat, unconscious and not breathing; he died at the scene. Harper, according to the charges, “made unsolicited statements that he had ‘the lottery winners and hit the jackpot’ and ‘they were chasing me.’” Police reportedly found 8.1 grams of a powdery white substance in the drivers side doorway of the Toyota, which they identified as cocaine.
