Governor Brian Kemp extended the state's public health emergency order one month past its original April 13 termination date in response to the increasing number of coronavirus cases.
More than 9,000 people have tested positive for the virus in Georgia since its public health emergency was first declared, and nearly 350 have died. Various cities and counties across the state implemented local ordinances that closed nonessential businesses and asked residents to exercise social distancing in the weeks following the state of emergency announcement.
"We must continue our aggressive fight against COVID-19," Duncan, the lieutenant governor, said in Wednesday's state of emergency announcement."Together, Speaker Ralston and I are working closely with Governor Kemp to do all we can to make sure we are meeting the needs of every Georgian."
