Counterterrorism police in Germany raided an apartment in the west of the country over the weekend, arresting an Iranian national and his brother who now stand accused of preparing an attack.
Special police forces in protective suits conduct search operations on properties linked to an Iranian national, a day after the man, 32, and his brother were detained on suspicion of planning a poison attack, January 9, 2023, in Castrop-Rauxel, North Rhine-Westphalia state, Germany.
Agents raided the home in the city of Castrop-Rauxel, in western Germany's North-Rhine Westphalia state, around midnight Saturday night. A number of police, firefighters and rescue workers took part, with many emergency personnel donning biochemical protection suits. No cyanide or ricin were found during the search of the 32-year-old man's apartment, the attorney general's office said.
After the operation in Castrop-Rauxel, North Rhine-Westphalia state Interior Minister Herbert Reul urged German politicians to take better advantage of intelligence tools, such as internet monitoring capabilities, to detect and disrupt such plots more quickly.
