BERLIN: Germany appealed to the public on Tuesday to download a new smartphone app to help break the chain of coronavirus infections, one of several such apps that European governments hope will revive travel and tourism safely.

In news coinciding with the German launch, European Union members agreed technical standards for national apps to 'talk' to each other - a step towards making it possible to trace infections across borders. Public enthusiasm for the app has been mixed - last week's Politbarometer opinion poll for ZDF found that 42per cent of people would download it and 46per cent would not, while 8per cent didn't have a new enough smartphone.
