Here is an exclusive first look at the 2020 Pirelli calendar, starring Yara Shahidi, Kristen Stewart, Indya Moore, Claire Foy, and many more.
, Mia Goth, and Emma Watson, and Roversi’s daughter, the Franco-Italian artist Stella Roversi. “I wanted a true casting, with women who would correspond to a kind of a journey featuring women of today from different countries and cultures,” he said. “Every one of them was marvelous. They all brought intensity and lots of emotion to a project that above all glorifies beauty and love.”
Shahidi, for one, brought her own annotated copy of Shakespeare’s tragedy to the set last May. “You literally can’t read it anymore because there are so many notes,” she told. “That was a real bonding moment. I just sat there and admired how every Juliet occupied her space.” The passage the actress chose for her audition? Without a moment’s hesitation: the one in which Capulet threatens to disown his daughter — an excerpt she now considers differently from when she first studied it in class.
Like her fellow Juliets, Shahidi had her own mood board — a holistic vision spanning hair, clothes, and makeup, as well as personal notions about beauty. To hone her look, she recounted how she drew on Victorian inspirations, adapting the traditional stick-straight standard to her hair’s curly texture. “I love my curls, so we turned them into a crown” she said. Makeup, she noted, was not necessarily about being “pretty” or “put together” but more about fulfilling an artistic idea.
For Roversi, the calendar has wrapped but his search for Juliet will go on indefinitely. “I think every woman has her inner Juliet,” he said. “In the end, the story is about love, and Juliet is a dream.”
