The giant Joro spider is invading Georgia and expected to spread quickly across Alabama.

Invasive Joro spider likely to spread in SoutheastA massive species of spider from Asia has been colonizing large chunks of the southeastern United States over the last few years, and wildlife experts say there’s little that can be done to stop the Joro spider from spreading. The good news: Those same experts say that apart from being huge and scary looking, the spider probably won’t be hugely disruptive to local ecosystems or harmful to humans in Alabama and other Southern states.

A map tracking reported sightings of the Joro spider, an Asian arachnid that was first reported in Georgia in 2013. From there, it’s spread both by hitchhiking on human vehicles and by moving itself through the air on a strand of silk.
