Following a previous failed attempt in South Korea, international talks aimed at establishing a legally binding treaty to combat plastic pollution will resume in Geneva in August.
The United Nations Environment Programme ( UNEP ) announced on Monday, March 3rd, that a new round of negotiations for an international treaty aimed at reducing global plastic pollution will take place in Geneva during August. This follows a previous round of negotiations held in South Korea last year that failed to reach an agreement on a legally binding treaty.
Plastic pollution has become a pervasive issue, with microplastics detected in the most remote corners of our planet, from the highest mountain peaks to the deepest ocean trenches, and even within the human body. The previous negotiations, which brought together delegates from nearly 200 nations, aimed to establish the world's first accord on curbing plastic pollution after nearly two years of discussions. However, the talks ultimately broke down due to opposition from a bloc of countries primarily involved in oil production. Delegates spent a week deliberating on strategies to prevent millions of tons of plastic waste from entering the environment annually. While the talks did not result in a concrete agreement, they did extend the negotiations to a future date. The new round of discussions will be held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva from August 5th to 14th
