Veteran opposition leader Goh Meng Seng has resigned as chief of the People's Power Party, which he founded in 2015. The party's central executive committee completed a renewal plan, electing William Lim Lian Chin as the new secretary-general. Goh's departure follows a disappointing performance in the 2025 general election where both PPP teams lost their deposits.
The People's Power Party ( PPP) announced on Monday, July 6, that its founder and long-time opposition leader Goh Meng Seng is stepping down from his role as chief.
The party stated that its central executive committee (CEC) has completed a renewal plan, resulting in the election of William Lim Lian Chin as the new secretary-general. Both Goh and Derrick Sim are stepping down from their posts and the CEC. The PPP expressed confidence that the new leadership will continue to strive to provide Singaporeans a real voice and contribute to the robust development of democracy in the nation.
Goh Meng Seng, now 56, began his political journey in 2001 with the Workers' Party (WP). He notably contested Aljunied GRC in the 2006 general election as part of the WP's 'A Team', which achieved 43.91% of the valid votes-the highest percentage among losing opposition candidates at the time-and saw Sylvia Lim become a non-constituency MP. Goh left the WP the same year. He joined the National Solidarity Party (NSP) in 2007, becoming its secretary-general.
Under his leadership, the NSP team contested Tampines GRC in the pivotal 2011 general election, securing 42.78% of valid votes. In the lead-up to the 2015 general election, Goh founded the PPP. He cited the death of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew as a motivating factor, arguing that separating power among different parties is necessary for checks and balances. PPP's debut performance in Chua Chu Kang GRC that year resulted in 23.09% of votes.
In the 2020 election, Goh contested MacPherson SMC against PAP's Tin Pei Ling, receiving 28.26% of the vote. Ahead of the 2025 polls, Goh served as organising secretary for the People's Alliance for Reform, an umbrella group including PPP, Reform Party, Peoples Voice, and Democratic Progressive Party.
However, he withdrew PPP from the alliance shortly before voting due to irreconcilable strategic differences. For the 2025 election, PPP fielded two teams: one in Tampines GRC (0.43% or 596 votes) and another in Ang Mo Kio GRC (10.2%). Both lost their deposits. After the results, a dispirited Goh, who reportedly sold his property to fund the campaign, told The Straits Times, "I don't think I have the desire any more. The fire is not there any more.
