COMMENT: 'In the long term Singaporean suppliers may be loath to return to Malaysian suppliers even after the ban.' 🍗
MAY 29 — Last week, Malaysia banned the export of chicken from June. Citing a shortage of chicken and rising prices domestically, the Malaysian government announced it would stop the export of chicken.
Covid related restrictions had already caused the cost of shipping to spike and deliveries to become less consistent. Exporting chickens to Singapore provides valuable revenue for Malaysian farmers and allows them to sell chicken more cheaply in the local market where the government imposes a ceiling price.
As we watch nations begin to prioritise themselves, entire systems will begin to break down and this rebalancing will be painful and the end result may not be more stable food chains. Any transition to more local supplies and greater self sufficiency will see disruptions and price rises in the short and medium term.
