Google has announced a significant reshuffle within its artificial intelligence division following the departure of several high-profile scientists. Demis Hassabis, the co‑founder of DeepMind and long‑time CEO, will transition into a chairman position while stepping aside from day‑to‑day operations.
In the new structure, Hassabis will hold two titles: chairman of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. The operational reins of the lab are being transferred to Koray Kavukcuoglu, a veteran deputy who has been promoted to senior vice president of DeepMind and will report directly to Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai. This move follows the exit of Jeff Dean, a cornerstone of Google's AI strategy, who is leaving to launch a start‑up with several colleagues.
The departure of Dean triggers a broader exodus that includes Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals, who will join the new venture, Discovery Loop. The start‑up plans to automate machine learning research to accelerate its own technology. Google has already invested heavily in the fledgling company and will provide cloud infrastructure as part of its ongoing partnership.
Earlier in the year, Google also saw the loss of Nobel laureate John Jumper, who joined Anthropic, and star researcher Noam Shazeer, who moved to OpenAI. These personnel changes come at a critical juncture for Google as it faces intense competitive pressure from other AI labs and generative platforms that are reshaping how consumers find information and how advertisers reach audiences.
The company has poured tens of billions of dollars into AI infrastructure and talent but has encountered criticism that it has been slow to translate cutting‑edge research into commercially relevant products. Delays in the launch of the flagship Gemini model and concerns about the company's AI roadmap are prompting analysts to question whether Google can maintain its leadership position.
The restructuring marks the most extensive reorganisation of Google's AI effort since the merger of DeepMind with the company's broader research teams in 2023. Hassabis, a former chess prodigy and neuroscientist, has been a key figure in mainstreaming AI and building landmark systems such as AlphaGo and AlphaFold, for which he shared a Nobel Prize in 2024.
In his own words, the decision to relinquish operational duties is intended to free him to focus on strategic vision and influence future directions. Beyond restructuring, Hassabis has continued to engage in global AI policy discussions, proposing a U.S.‑led international body to regulate AI safety. He will remain head of Isomorphic Labs, an Alphabet spin‑off from DeepMind dedicated to drug discovery.
The combined effect of these changes is expected to test Google's talent acquisition and retention strategy while amplifying pressure on the firm to catch up to rivals in AI innovation.
