At an outdoor conference, reminiscent of a music festival, Google CEO Sundar Pichai introduced its latest large language model, PaLM 2 powering more than 25 products and features.
There are plans to enhance MedPaLM 2's capabilities to interpret information from medical imaging, such as plain films and mammograms. Pichai envisages an AI collaborator"that assists radiologists in interpreting images and communicating the results." As he put it, these are just a few examples of how the model is being utilized in specialized domains, and he eagerly anticipates its wider application.
This progress has been made possible by the collective efforts of Google Brain and DeepMind, which have now been combined into a single unit, Google DeepMind. With Google's computational resources at their disposal, they are focused on building more capable systems in a safe and responsible manner. Pichai also highlighted tools to identify synthetically generated content. Two crucial approaches being adopted are watermarking and metadata. Watermarking embeds information directly into the content in ways that are retained even through modifications. Google is focusing on integrating watermarking and other techniques from the start.
