Google is set to unveil a big new gaming project tomorrow, taking on Xbox and PlayStation with something that might look more like a console or a streaming-based 'console killer'.
It seems unlikely that Google is set to unveil a beefy, graphics-driven machine akin to an Xbox or a PlayStation, however. A much more likely product would be a sort of Chromecast for games, a low-cost device designed for streaming and interacting with a controller of some kind. Theoretically, you could maybe just do this with existing hardware, but the pomp and circumstance here points to something new.
Finally, a recent hire points to some involvement in game development, as well, likely suggesting that Google will either be developing some exclusive games for its new platform or at the very least buying some. The company recently brought Jade Raymond on board as a vice president, famous for her work on the series at Ubisoft as well as a ton of other work in the AAA gaming space, most recently at EA.
The term"console killer" has been around at least since OnLive promised it could leverage game streaming to make local computing irrelevant. That seems unlikely to materialize any time soon, but I suspect we're going to see a compromise instead: something that has elements of both a traditional console and the fabled console killer, a low-cost machine that can do some work on its own while offloading the bulk of the heavy stuff to the cloud.
