Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski issued a warning to her fellow Republicans about their stance on defunding federal law enforcement agencies.
Robert Y. Shapiro, a professor of political science at Columbia University, toldthat Murkowski's remarks show she is taking issues of law and order"much more seriously" than other Republicans, who he said would be"thinking differently if the federal authorities were going after a Democratic politician."
Shapiro noted that the public generally opposes both efforts to defund the police and federal law enforcement.that it is not surprising to see more moderate Republicans rejecting calls to defund these agencies, which he described as"more artifacts of the personal following that Trump has." "Senators like Murkowski are already persona non grata among the Trump faithful, so they are not really risking anything politically in registering their disagreement with such calls," Reeher said.
