The U.S. govenment faces a shutdown if Congress is unable to pass a short-term funding bill. Conservative Republicans have been the stumbling block to a deal.
Congress entered the weekend without having in hand a deal to avert a federal government shutdown. All eyes are on House Republicans, whose failure to advance spending bills has made that even much more likely by a deadline late Saturday night.Andrew Caballero-Reynolds | Afp | Getty Images
All eyes in Washington, D.C., are on House Republicans, whose leader, Speaker Kevin McCarthy, has been unable to get his caucus to agree on a so-called continuing resolution that would also win approval by the Senate and President Joe Biden. And if McCarthy tries to end-run them by pushing a stopgap funding package that would be palatable to Democrats in the House, the Californian risks losing his already precarious leadership by triggering an effort by conservatives led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida to remove him as speaker.
