Greg Craig’s longstanding reputation for honesty and candor came under sharp attack on Thursday as the former Obama White House counsel concluded his testimony at his trial on a charge of concealing information from the Justice Department about his work related to Ukraine.
It was unclear how various lawyerly claims that Craig, 74, offered during seven hours on the witness stand over two days are likely to play with the jury, which listened intently to his testimony. During his grilling on Thursday, Craig also conceded that an email and draft letter he sent to a Skadden colleague about the Ukraine work misstated aspects of his interactions with Sanger.
Craig has maintained that his outreach to Sanger was not as an agent of Ukraine but was done to protect his reputation and Skadden’s in the wake of indications that Ukraine’s public relations team was planning to present a skewed and inaccurate summary of the Tymoshenko report. Another message showed Hawker mentioning to Craig plans to take the report to The Washington Post or to Al Hunt at Bloomberg if The Times passed. Craig responded that there was still time to try The Post or Hunt.“No. I say, ‘We are on it,’” Craig said.“Yes — about what I’ve done,” Craig replied.
