The Graduate Industry Traineeships ( GRIT) scheme, launched in October, has seen less than half of its initial capacity of 800 places filled. This initiative, designed to provide crucial industry experience for fresh graduates, offers traineeships lasting three to six months, with a monthly allowance ranging from S$1,800 to S$2,400. The government co-funds 70 percent of these allowances.
Manpower Minister Tan See Leng visited Thales Solutions Asia, a French aerospace and security company that has onboarded five trainees, to reassure young graduates about the job market. He highlighted the increasing number of entry-level roles for professionals, managers, executives, and technicians (PMETs), which rose from 31,000 in June 2025 to 39,000 in September 2025, emphasizing the resilience of Singapore's labor market. He anticipates continued employment growth in 2026, with nearly seven in ten of last year's university cohort already employed by September 2025. The government is providing resources like career events and advisors to assist graduates in their job searches and prioritize securing permanent employment. The minister affirmed the government's commitment to supporting graduates for a strong career start.\The GRIT scheme targets fresh graduates from universities, polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education, and other educational institutions who lack prior work experience, including those with master's degrees or doctorates. Singapore citizens and permanent residents who graduated or completed National Service in 2024 or 2025 are eligible. Skyler Teo, a 25-year-old engineering graduate, shared his experience joining Thales for a six-month traineeship in January after a challenging job search involving nearly 200 applications. He found the GRIT scheme helpful, receiving responses from several companies after applying through the program. He noted the preference for diploma holders in technical roles and the requirement of work experience for higher-level positions in his field. Teo expressed his hope to secure a full-time position at Thales, where CEO Emily Tan highlighted the company's commitment to supporting young talent. She also mentioned the competitive nature of the GRIT program for both trainees and companies.\According to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and Workforce Singapore (WSG), more than 50 companies have joined the GRIT scheme, encompassing sectors like manufacturing, financial services, information and communications technology, and professional services. Prominent companies such as DBS, GrabTaxi, LinkedIn, Nestle, OCBC, Razer, SATS, ST Engineering, and UOB are participating. The traineeships cover both niche technical roles and broader cross-functional roles, reflecting the diverse skills in demand. WSG, in collaboration with Enterprise Singapore, the Economic Development Board, and the Monetary Authority of Singapore, identified these opportunities. Additionally, sixty public sector agencies offer traineeships coordinated by the Public Service Division, with trainees joining organizations such as MOM, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Education, and Singapore Polytechnic. The GRIT initiative, part of the Singapore Economic Resilience Taskforce, aims to provide graduates with industry-relevant experience to facilitate their transition to full-time employment. The scheme was initially announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during the National Day Rally in August 2025, with a plan for a focused rollout and potential scaling up based on economic conditions
