Preservation group says environmental analysis insufficient for project that also includes hotel and 700 homes at former drive-in theater property
A local preservationist group has filed a petition asking the San Diego Superior Court to overturn Oceanside’s approval of Ocean Kamp, an artificial surfing lagoon, a 300-room resort hotel and 700 homes proposed for the San Luis Rey Valley.
“We were thrilled to receive unanimous approval from the Planning Commission and the City Council, including Mayor Sanchez, and we stand by the city’s rigorous environmental review process,” Corn said by email. The Ocean Kamp site covers 92 acres that for many years was home to the Valley Drive-In movie theater and a weekend swap meet, north of Mission Avenue and state Route 76, east of Foussat Road. The drive-in closed in 1999 and the screens were demolished in 2016. The swap meet ended in 2019.
