Guardians pitching coach Carl Willis underwent testing during Wednesday's home game against Colorado. Manager Terry Francona said after the game that Willis, 62, was feeling better, but did not provide further details on what prompted the episode.
Later, at the Cavs’ NBA playoff game against the Knicks, Francona told cleveland.com that Willis is being kept overnight but still “doing OK.” An update is expected Thursday when Willis is discharged.
Francona said Willis was walking toward the Guardians dugout from the bullpen in center field after watching rookie Tanner Bibee finish his pregame warmups. “Right as he was getting toward the warning track there in the dugout, he was getting dizzy and lightheaded,” Francona said. “Kind of out of an abundance of caution and against his , they took him to get some tests. He was kind of fighting it all the way.”
Francona said he reached out via phone after the game ended and was able to get a text message back from Willis, who is in his 13th season as Cleveland’s pitching coach.
