FirstEnergy’s money helped Householder secure power in the Ohio House as well as help elect loyalists to support his bid for speaker and fight against an eventual campaign to undo the nuclear bailout. The money funneled through a dark-money nonprofit, Generation Now, that prosecutors say Householder controlled and that allowed the conspirators to conceal their activities.
As for Borges, prosecutors said he joined the conspiracy later, but that he understood the corrupt relationship between Householder and FirstEnergy. They said he used FirstEnergy money to try to bribe a political operative working on the referendum campaign, but the operative notified the FBI.that hasn’t proven the allegations. Householder’s attorney questioned why former executives at FirstEnergy and other top politicians in Ohio were not called to testify.
