Faculty members will still be able to speak on issues on behalf of themselves.
“The university and its leaders should not, however, issue official statements about public matters that do not directly affect the university’s core function,” the report said.
“That environment is threatened these days, and we need to defend it,” he continued. “At the same time, the university as an institution should not make official statements on issues outside its core function. Harvard isn’t a government. It shouldn’t have a foreign policy or a domestic policy.” The final reason said that in the interest of diversity of viewpoints, choosing a side could undermine “the inclusivity of the university community” and “make it more difficult for some members of the community to express their views when they differ from the university’s official position.”
