Hasbro and other toy makers are demonstrating they can survive, and even win, without Toys 'R' Us. But there are good reasons to want Toys 'R' Us back in the game.
Transformers Bumblebee action figures helped boost Hasbro's first-quarter sales in a changing toy universe. Photographer: David Williams/BloombergHasbro’s better than expected first-quarter results proved it doesn’t need Toys 'R' Us to win in the toy business.
And the brands that drove the first quarter growth—particularly digital gaming hits such as the Magic: The Gathering new releases—show how much the toy industry has changed since Charles Lazarus built his chain of toy superstores into a retail category killer. That was truer, however, for small and mid-size toy makers than for giants like Hasbro and Mattel. Toys 'R' Us, with its aisles and aisles of shelf space to fill in its jumbo stores, could launch new products or allow a manufacturer to display its entire product line, not just one or two bestsellers.
The Hasbro bounce in the first quarter, Silver contends, isn’t a sign that life is good post-Toys 'R' Us, but rather that life isn’t as bad as it was in 2018, when bottom lines across the industry were dealt a blow by the Toys 'R' Us bankruptcy. While a specialty toy chain would give small and mid-size companies a launch pad, it also would benefit giants like Hasbro by giving them a place to showcase new lines or hold events, Silver said.
