Igor Kirillov, the commander of Russia's chemical, biological and radiation defense troops, was killed in an explosion outside a residential building in Moscow. Ukrainian security officials claimed responsibility for the attack, calling Kirillov a 'war criminal' and saying he ordered the use of banned chemical weapons against Ukrainian forces.
Investigators and police experts work by a body at the blast scene, which killed the commander of Russia n armed forces' chemical, biological and radiation defence troops, Igor Kirillov, outside a residential building on Ryazansky Avenue in Moscow on Dec 17, 2024.
The killing of Kirillov was a"special operation" by Ukraine's SBU security service, a source inside the agency told AFP. Kirillov was on Monday charged in absentia by Ukrainian authorities over alleged war crimes following an investigation by the SBU. Kirillov, who was in October sanctioned by Britain over the alleged use of chemical weapons in Ukraine, is the most senior Russian military official to be killed in such a blast in Moscow since the start of Kremlin's offensive in Ukraine nearly three years ago.
The UK government in October slapped sanctions on Kirillov and his unit"for helping deploy these barbaric weapons", charges that Moscow has denied. In June, Ukraine accused Russia of increasing frontline attacks using prohibited hazardous chemicals and had registered more than 700 cases of their use the previous month.
