The 2022 Hearst Sustainability Overview, which covered the previous three years, trackedacross two categories that measure direct emissions from natural gas used in Hearst offices and facilities, and indirect emissions, related to electricity, steam and in-house printing. Those emissions fell more than 11 percent to 58,200 metric tons in 2021 from 65,700 in 2019.
The decline in greenhouse gas emissions was almost certainly aided by the COVID-19 pandemic, when fewer people were in offices using computers, riding elevators and turning on other appliances in offices, said David Carey, Hearst’s vice president of public affairs and communication. Many such activities were transferred to employees’ homes, where emissions output can’t yet be calculated.
