A low-pressure system underwent 'bombogenesis' today on the central Plains, becoming one of the strongest lows ever recorded in this part of the country.

Blizzard conditions are rocking communities in Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming today as an intense low-pressure system rapidly strengthens on the central Plains. The storm became a “bomb cyclone,” a scary-sounding term that refers to how quickly the storm intensified. Today’s storm is a classic example of bombogenesis, the source of the “bomb cyclone” term that floods social media every couple of weeks without much context behind it. Bombogenesis occurs when a low-pressure system's minimum central pressure drops at least 24 millibars over the course of 24 hours. Trinidad, Colorado, saw its air pressure drop from 1002 mb at 12:00 PM on Tuesday to 974 mb at 12:00 PM on Wednesday.
