Historic music shop HMV is set to return to its flagship store on London’s Oxford Street after a four-year absence.
The central London store was empty for an extended period of time when the music and entertainment company vacated in 2019. HMV is expected to reopen later this year in time for the Christmas holiday period. When it opens, the site is expected to sell an array of pop culture merchandise, vinyl, film and music technology and host performances from up-and-coming artists. The first HMV shop was opened in 1921 by British composer Sir Edward Elgar. It was one of 27 HMV outlets to close in February 2019 when Putman acquired the music retailer. The group now has 120 branches across the U.K., including its subsidiary Fopp.
Back in 1962, the Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein made a copy of the band’s demo tape on the premises, prompting attention from an EMI music producer in the upstairs offices and leading to the band’s astronomical rise to fame.
