Hollywood's Meeting of the Masters dinner serves up 'reinvention of the ego'
Shalem began charging to cover costs about a year ago at Murray's urging: "I said, 'You're really good at bringing different kinds of people together,'" explains Murray, who has hosted two dinners. "I encouraged him to make a business of it. … It's something he enjoys doing, but he shouldn't be doing it as a charity for all of us.”
Less than a month ago, Shalem took on Broadway producer Scott Mauro as a creative consultant to help with marketing and is preparing to launch Meeting of the Masters as an LLC. The pair eventually hope to partner with nonprofits, book more guest chefs, bring the dinners to other cities and throw custom corporate feasts as VIP events.
The filmmaker describes his process of inviting the perfect mix of guests as a game of chess. "The beauty of the game is in its balance of all the pieces. And I often think about this when I help curate the tables," he says.
