HONG KONG – The city centre is in lockdown mode on Sunday as it braces itself for a fresh round of anti-extradition rally that could go south as online calls by protesters to escalate actions grow.

The rally will begin at Victoria Park, in popular shopping district Causeway Bay, and will see the march go through Causeway Road, Leighton Road, Irving Street, Pennington Street, Yee Wo Street and Hennessy Road to end in Wan Chai. The Front’s vice-convenor Bonnie Leung said on Saturday that the group wanted the march to end in Central or Admiralty as Wan Chai is already packed with visitors attending the annual book fair at the Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The protests were sparked by Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s move to amend existing legislation that will allow Hong Kong to send suspects to the mainland for trials. In anticipation of possible clashes, security at major government buildings has been beefed up over the weekend with giant water barriers surrounding the government headquarters in Admiralty and police headquarters in Wan Chai.On Saturday, three men aged between 25 and 27 were arrested in connection with the seizure of explosives, firebombs and other weapons in a industrial building in the Tsuen Wan district.
