The Hong Kong leader announced Wednesday that she will withdraw the extradition bill that sparked months of protests
in June but refused to formally withdraw it, raising concerns that it could be revived at any time. “Postponement is temporary,” democratic lawmakersaid at the time. “It’s just delaying the pain.” The protests, driven by young people, continued throughout the summer; the demonstrations have been largely peaceful, but violence has increased in recent weeks, and the economy has taken a hit.
Still, it’s unclear whether protesters will be satisfied. “That it took her three months to formally use the word withdraw is truly too little, too late,” Mo told reporters. “A big mistake has been made.” While the demonstrations began in response to the extradition bill, they have since grown to encompass a broader set of demands. Lam herself seemed to acknowledge that the protests have evolved beyond their original mandate.
