Houston Airports predict spring break travel to set record
Travelers wait in line to get through security at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The airport system is expecting the busiest spring break season on record this year.A record 2.3 million passengers are expected to pass through Houston's airports this spring break, eclipsing the 2.2 million passengers in pre-pandemic 2019 and well ahead of last year's 1.8 million, according to a spokesperson for Houston Airport System.
Jim Szczesniak, COO of the Houston Airport System, said the two would be spreading flights around the terminals and there would be an increase in Houston Police Department officers directing traffic at their airports. The uptick comes amid a rebound for the airline industry from the depths of the pandemic, Szczesniak said, pointing to a 20 percent increase in staffing at the system from a year earlier.
Air travel over the Labor Day and Thanksgiving holidays last year also exceeded 2019 levels, he said. With the added visits, the city is bracing for an expected increase in traffic in and around the airports.
