A nationally televised Friday night matchup against Tulane will serve as the University of Houston’s annual “blackout” game.
Perhaps it’s apropos as the Cougars look to forget a non-conference schedule that produced a 2-2 mark entering American Athletic Conference play. Tulane presents a tough opening challenge as the Cougars look to correct issues in nearly every phase, including a nation-worst 43 penalties and a defense prone to final-drive letdowns. To add to the concerns, several key players are dealing with injuries – among them linebacker Donavan Mutin, left tackle Patrick Paul, safety Gervarrius Owens, cornerback Art Green and wide receiver Joseph Manjack Jr. – are expected to be game-time decisions.
“We’ve had three battles with them the last three seasons and I think Friday is going to be another one of those battles,” UH coach Dana Holgorsen said.A torn biceps will sideline Derek Parish for the rest of the season, the school announced earlier this week, as UH must move forward without its top edge rusher. “You can’t replace that but we’re going to have to try,” Holgorsen said.
