Here's how the investigation into the killing of Da Tara Johnson unfolded, and how police found the suspect all the way in Arizona.

IMPD Assistant Chief Chris Bailey talks about the complicated issues of homicide in Indianapolis, 'We didn't get here overnight. We're certainly not going to turn it around overnight.'Paperwork tucked into the pocket of a pair of pants found in a dumpster helped lead police to 18-year-old Da Tara Johnson's suspected killer, according to court records.in connection with Johnson's slaying on Jan. 16.

Detectives searched the apartment complex. One detective noticed a duffel bag placed in a nearby dumpster. It appeared out of place, the detective said in the affidavit. No frost blanketed the top, despite it being 17 degrees outside. No trash surrounded the bag, either. Surveillance footage from the apartment further captured a dark figure driving out of the complex’s parking lot in a Lincoln one minute before police received a call about the shooting. The person just prior had left the area of Johnson’s apartment — detectives noted they possibly carried a bag — then walked to the dumpster area and ran out of the camera's view.

In February, Indianapolis detectives, Phoenix homicide detectives and a Deputy U.S. Marshal helped serve a search warrant on the apartment in Arizona. The affidavit said they found York on the balcony.
