, the Saskatchewan government and the federal government signed a letter of intent to formalize an agreement to create a PAGC Public Safety Implementation Team, with a plan to move forward on Indigenous-led public safety programs tailored to member communities’ needs. Findings from community consultations would shape the design and determine the cost of a feasibility study under the FNIPP.

Head says James Smith Cree Nation has a working relationship with local RCMP, and the respect they have for each other has “gained momentum” since the tragedy. The CSC said in a statement that its staff are required by policy to have discussions with community partners and police of the jurisdiction of destination before someone’s release to that community. It said Myles Sanderson got statutory release in August 2021 to Saskatoon, not James Smith Cree Nation. He had been unlawfully at large since May 24, 2022.by the CSC and the Parole Board of Canada is looking at the decision to release him, and his supervision in the community.

He has spoken to federal government ministers and at the First Minister’s Conference in Halifax about the issue, and has visited other communities to learn more about their models, such as Alberta’s Tsuut’ina Nation and Siksika Nation.
