I love coffee and if you deprive me of it, I get “cangry”. And that’s a problem in countries with terrible coffee.

It’s breakfast time at a rustic stay early in my tour of Samoa. An influencer takes a picture of my hot beverage, then shows me, and the rest of our group, the social media post she’s turned it into.

I may also be addicted to it, because if you deprive me of it, I get “cangry” , or so I discover, there in rural Shikoku. As we exit the town in question in a mini-bus, guide and driver up front, my small group in the back, I spy an outlet of the Japanese convenience store giant, Lawson, up ahead on the other side of the highway. It’s got a huge “cafe” sign on the roof, indicating this franchise serves proper coffee.

I may be addicted to coffee, but I also have coffee standards . I say no to canned coffee – just as I say no to the instant stuff, such as was in my hotel room earlier that day.“Haha! You are like Mr Coffee!” our guide replies. “My last tour was with some Americans. One man was like you! He asked a lot for coffee! I called him Mr Coffee!”During what feels like a very long day, my asking turns to pleading, then finally to “cangry” as we pass many “coffee” and “cafe” signs.

I buy it, and, having checked it’s okay to bring coffee into Samoa, I also buy a bag of ground beans by Melbourne’s-own St Ali. Every morning of that trip, I make myself a mug of excellent strong, black coffee, sometimes two.
