When the Great Recession reached full swing in the fall of 2008, attorney-turned-chocolatier Shawn Askinosie found himself at a crossroads. “I was lost,” he says. “I didn’t know what to do or how to act.”

Desperate, he took to Google and searched for the term “advisory board.” That led him to a magazine article that suggested he ask people in his community to form a volunteer board whose members would share their business wisdom with him. In its first quarter, the small group met four times.
