While Disney's live-action 'Cinderella' contains many of the same classic story points, it updates the original with more developed characters.

The tale that we now know as Cinderella can be traced all the way back to sixth century BCE, so it’s no surprise that the world has seen an overabundance of adaptations – both in literature and onscreen. Disney’s release of the animated version in 1950 was a huge success, but it perpetuated the idea that Cinderella is a damsel in distress who needs a prince to save her.

Though Cinderella’s parents are dead in most versions, the audience is rarely given enough time with her parents to feel like grief is a major element of the story. In this film, however, grief is everywhere, and the actors reflect that pain in their performances.

The Cinderella and Prince Charming love story in this film is also different from others. When Ella and Kit meet in the woods, Kit is hunting a beautiful stag and Ella convinces him not to. Ella’s kindness and independence cause Kit to become infatuated with her. He prevents her from hearing his men call him Your Highness so as not to ruin their “meet-cute”, and tells Ella that he is an apprentice.

When it comes time for Ella to try on her glass slipper, the prince himself shows up to put it on her despite Lady Tremaine’s attempts to keep her locked in the attic. When Lady Tremaine calls herself Ella’s mother, Ella sternly tells her that she “never was and never will be” her mother. This shows that as kind as Ella is, she has learned to stick up for herself, which gives her and Lady Tremaine's back and forths/relationship a lot more complexity.
