Allison Key, co-owner of Michigan Glass Project, unites artists through charitable events that create and foster positive change in the community. She uses glassblowing as a platform to raise money. Through this concept, she sells her glass creations, which 100% of sales are donated to Art Road.
Key grew up in the world of glassblowing. Her father was a prominent glassblower in Michigan. In an effort to follow her own path, she was pre-med in school. During this time, her father began touring with music festivals selling his art. She joined him and started blowing glass herself. After that experience, she decided she was going to be a full-time glassworker. She met other glass workers in the area and moved into a shop with them. ...
“That was tough for me,” Key shares. “I knew that making that choice meant I was not going to be on my torch making my own work anymore. I was going to be on the phone, I was going to be on the computer, I was going to be running another business. It took a little time to do that but I had to realize and understand that our glass industry wanted to embrace me in this way as a businesswoman, as an entrepreneur, as a leader and step into that role versus being one of the glass artists myself.
Trust your team. Also, allow them to trust you as a leader and help pave the way for the next course.
