On Tuesday, March 10, after my final plié, my weekly ballet class ended with a quick sanitization session. My instructor Anastasia doled out wipes from a Lysol cylinder so that my fellow students and I could wipe down the wooden barres we had just clutched for the past hour and a half. Meanwhile, the pianist cleaned her piano, creating a musical zip as her hand traveled across the keys.
The next day I awoke to an email from our company’s CEO stating that, if possible, we should all work from home. A couple of days after that, the suggestion quickly evolved into a mandate. Next in my inbox was the memo from my ballet school, Joffrey, stating that all classes had been suspended for the foreseeable future. It’s now been over two weeks that I have spent mostly indoors and alone in my apartment.
I’m by no means a dancer; I’d rather call myself a balletomane who will leap at any opportunity to put on a tutu. I go to class for the music, for the accoutrements and because in that hour and a half, I think of every single inch of my body and its presentation. Is my turnout stemming from my hips? Are my shoulders lifted back? And what to do with these pesky thumbs?On an endless scroll down my Instagram feed some morning last week, I paused onannouncing that she would be livestreaming her workouts daily via IGTV. A double-tap and a hip-hip-hooray later, I was in my living room at the appointed time , my stockinged legs in position as I waited for Peck’s singsongy voice to fill my room.
