don’t crop up until the very end of—named for how Yelchin used to sign letters to his mother—but that information reframes the entire documentary. Price uses home video and cell phone footage, letters, journal entries, and old interview audio to tell the bulk of this story from Yelchin’s point of view; it makes Yelchin as much the filmmaker as anyone else.
The chaos and demons of Yelchin’s life shine through brightest in a section of the film that covers what Price calls “the extracurricular activities, the lurking in seedy L.A. stuff.” Yelchin, who himself referred to his nocturnal jaunts to Van Nuys as “lurking,” delighted in photographing strange and sexually explicit scenarios.
