At 17 years old, Luc Forsyth was considering a serious change — he wanted to find something that would challenge him. His roommate offered up a suggestion: 'Why don't you go into tree planting?' The question changed his life.
Tree planters walk into a cut block with no road access, carrying food, water and a full load of trees to be planted. Unpaid walk-ins of up to an hour are not uncommon in remote areas.
Now, having established a career in documentary filmmaking, he's returned to his former life to share just what tree-planting is with the rest of the world.A tree planter works through a clear cut in central Alberta. A standard contract requires a seedling to be planted every two meters in order for an area to be considered adequately reforested.
Tree planters walk out of their land at the end of a day. A typical work day is approximately 10 hours during which planters will put thousands of seedlings in the ground. "But then I just, after five minutes, was like, 'Well, I guess I'll go back to planting these trees.' And then I did it for five years."A planter works her way through a particularly dense section of cut block. The difficultly of the terrain can vary greatly from block to block and tree prices are normally adjusted to reflect the land conditions.
On top of that, there's a social aspect that plays a big part in helping tree-planters find community during what can be a very isolating job. "You don't sign up because you're looking for an easy way to make a quick buck. If you decide to do it, you're usually looking for something more and you think the experience could be valuable to you," Forsyth says.
