Speaking at Apple's annual WWDC was a huge moment for you and the tech industry in general. Do you have a pre-game ritual before speaking on such a grand scale? Yes for sure! For one, I'm a gal who loves glam, and I often see my lipstick as my warrior paint, so sometimes when I'm preparing for those types of moments where I have to go really big, the brighter my lipstick is going to be.
In addition to that, I'm pretty spiritual, so I do like to find my quiet space, especially before big moments like the Apple one. Sometimes it's in a quick prayer, sometimes it's in a little breathing exercise. Just getting quiet, to quiet all of the voices and the fear and the butterflies, because I get those just as much as anybody else — so those two things usually give me power.
And so I started forcing myself to say at least just one thing in the meeting — and it didn't matter what I said, it could have just been something like,"I think Bob had a great idea" and I started finding, after I did that for some time, it would give me enough energy and power to then be able to say the next thing. So for all of us, practice makes perfect. Finding your voice means practicing your voice, so do it — do it often. Try it.
