Why buying a new Tesla can be a better deal than buying a used one

By comparison, a brand new Model 3 can be ordered for $39,480, less the $1,875 tax credit that remains available through the end of 2019. That means a pre-owned version with several thousand miles on the odometer would be listed at as much as $10,000 more than a factory fresh version. The Model 3 Performance fares better, as a new example equipped with enhanced Autopilot goes for $63,990, and would list at a dealership for $52,150.

KBB says a base 2018 version of the Model S 100D with a range of 335 miles would typically be listed for $76,911. That’s a difference of just $1,229, factoring in the tax credit, and with 25 fewer miles on a charge. The 2018 Performance model with a 315-mile range would be listed for $99,459, which is actually a bit higher than a new model that can go for more than 30 miles farther, considering the tax credit.

What about an older Model S? Comparing apples to apples, a 2016 Tesla Model S P100D with a 315-mile range is estimated to list for around $85,000 at a dealership. That’s actually more than a brand new Model S in its base version currently commands that can go for 370 miles on a charge. Meanwhile, the P1000 Performance version from 2016 that can run for 289 miles lists for $71,562, which is around $6,500 less than a brand new one with a far longer range.
