How a social worker quit her job to run a 6-figure doggie daycare and spa with 1,400 clients
Her business, MaryMac's Doggie Retreat, booked more than $105,000 in revenue this year.Courtney McWilliams was a social worker in New Orleans when she learned that her shih tzu, Gabbana, had separation anxiety.that understood her dog's needs, she said. She realized that when it comes to mental health, dogs and humans aren't too different.
In 2018, McWilliams started providing dog daycare services out of her home while she worked as a social worker and drove for Uber and Lyft."I combined social work with doggy daycare to offer a more serene environment for dogs to reduce their anxiety," she said. She applied for 21 loans to expand her business but was rejected from all of them. She later found out her identity had been stolen; her credit score had plummeted, making it impossible to get a loan.
From there she grew her clientele by expanding her services into grooming. Since most groomers were closed at that time, McWilliams tapped into the unmet demand in her area. She didn't know much about grooming, but she watched YouTube videos to learn, and she priced her services low at first. She also hosts holiday-themed parties for the dogs, with goodie bags, professional pictures, a nature walk, time for socializing, and, for Easter, an egg hunt.
