Instead of posting images because we’re confident in how we look, we’re succumbing to an unspoken competition with both others and ourselves – and it’s not making us feel good.
They say comparison is the thief of joy, and yet it has never been more difficult to avoid other people’s lives – and the things about them that we envy. Every time we log on to a social media platform, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram or even LinkedIn, we’re faced with other people’s successes, happy moments and seemingly perfect set-ups.
“Comparison calls into question our belief in our own abilities in many different ways,” says comparison coach Lucy Sheridan. “By comparing we grade ourselves against others, focusing on our shortcomings and perceived weaknesses, which can chip away at our confidence.” Not only does this constant comparing steal our joy, it drastically impacts our self-esteem; we lose time looking at other people when we could be investing in ourselves, how we feel, and our own progress.
