Alexandra Jacobs’s new biography, Still Here: The Madcap, Nervy, Singular Life of Elaine Stritch, plants the Broadway legend squarely at the center of New York for the better part of a century.

Stritch died in 2014 at the age of 89. There’s a Forrest Gump–like quality to the long stretch of her life, told beat for beat, one-liner to one-liner in Jacobs’s deeply researched biography, published in October. Unlike Jacobs and I, Stritch’s timing was quite good, and it only got better with age. Stritch’s career was a scatterplot of qualified successes that, in time, amounted to an upward trajectory, and Jacobs covers the roles she didn’t get as much as the roles she did. She was Ethel Merman’s understudy inthe actors had a delightfully antagonistic relationship throughout Merman’s life. Her breakout was probably a revival ofWho’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf?
By September 13, they decided the show must go on, and started read-throughs. "She became a figure of survival," Jacobs said. "New Yorkers went to that show, and her message was very much, ‘I’ve been through it. I’ve been through this, I’ve been through that.’"
