The coronavirus has hit workers hard, leaving many restaurant employees, domestic workers and others worried about making ends meet. Here’s how you can help them.
By Michelle Ma April 20, 2020 2:26 pm ET Many workers have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, whether they are delivery people or farmworkers, or those who have lost their jobs, like restaurant employees or domestic help. Here’s how you can help them.
Employers can show their support by signing an online pledge to continue paying for scheduled work during the pandemic, launched by the NDWA-partner Hand in Hand, a network of domestic-worker employers. In response, his group and others have set up relief funds to address the needs of these workers. Half of RWCF’s Covid-19 Relief Fund is going toward financial assistance for restaurant workers seeking help, a quarter toward nonprofits including food pantries and legal aid, and the rest to a zero-interest loan program to help restaurants eventually start back up.
Relief funds have also been set up to assist domestic workers, including one by the NDWA, and one for farmworkers organized by advocacy group Justice for Migrant Women. You can also look to your local community organizations to identify those in need and understand how you can contribute.
